Off-Grid Systems
An off-grid solar system works independently from the electricity grid. They are more complicated than a normal solar system as they use more components. This is because there is no grid. Instead of having the electricity grid they rely on a backup energy source (generally a generator). Many other components such as Batteries and Wind turbines can be added depending on the need.
Rural locations
In rural locations they are often an essential part of the electricity supply. If you are building a house on the outskirts of town it may become too expensive to have the grid line installed. In these cases, an off-grid system can be installed to give total independent energy.
The system design
The components of the off-grid system are more complex than the normal solar system. This often makes the system more expensive. A major component are the batteries that are used to store the solar energy. An off-grid solar system needs to have a larger battery bank as it is not efficient to keep using the generator. Here is a diagram that explains how the components work.
Should you go Off-Grid?
This would depend on your situation. There are many advantages to going Off-Grid. As mentioned in a rural location, avoiding the costs associated with getting the grid connected. It will also give you complete power independence without ongoing power bills.
